How do Air Source Heat Pumps work?

Like how a refrigerator removes heat from its interior, air source heat pumps do the same with the air outside. After that, they reactivate the heat in your house. Although heat pumps require power to operate, they have a little environmental impact because the heat they remove is naturally regenerated, making them more sustainable.

Basic Information about Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps are one of the best options for future proofing the heating and hot water demand.  Stepping away from fossil fuel dependacy is a good idea.

Heat pumps will distribute heat evenly an air source heat pump reduces carbon emissions, could lower power costs, generally requires less maintenance than a fossil fuel burning boiler. Heat pumps have a much longer life expectancy than boilers being 8-10 years a heat pump should last around 20 years. Heat pumps also offers consistent comfort that can be remotly controled.

Most types of domestic properties, whether rural or urban, can explore the feasibility of having a heat pump installed. Air source heat pumps (ASHP) resemble air conditioners in appearance. Compared to ground source heat pumps (GSHP), an ASHP installation causes less disturbance because it doesn’t involve digging a large trench or boring holes in gardens or land around the property.  ASHP unit would be located outside of your property a GSHP would be installed within the property in a plant room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than gas?

Since air-source heat pumps are around three times more efficient than gas boilers, they use much less energy to heat the property.  It will depend on how the heat pump is set up and what demand you have for heating and hot water.  Heat pumps are more energy efficient so if you use the heat pump correctly then you could reduce the heating and hot water cost.  One of the benefits of switiching to a heat pump is that you can step away from gas/LPG or oil taking away the standing charge cost of this supply.

How much does it cost to fit a heat pump in the UK?

Fitting an air source heat pump usually costs between £11,000 and £18,000. Greener Home Renewables will put forward our best prices first.  The Government Grant of £7,500.00 will be processed by us.   The Grant of £7,500.00 will be deducted from the final balance payment.  The cost of the installation would on average from only £5,000 to £9,000 after the government grant has been deducted.   A ground source heat pump installation would cost between £19,000 and £30,000 lot more work involved. All quotes are subject to survey and heat loss calculations.

Can a heat pump heat a whole house?

The short answer is yes — you can rely on a heat pump to effectively heat your entire home as long as the property has been surveyed by someone experienced and qualified, the heat loss calculations are correct, bespoke design, good quality equipment installed, and the installation are guided by the design.   A heat pump will supply the heating and hot water demand of your property if the installation is designed and installed correctly.

How long does it take to install a heat pump?

For the average 3-5 bedroomed property a heat pump installation would take around one 5 – 7 working days.  The heating would be off during part of the installation this would be kept to a minium disruption.

We I need to pay for a survey?

Greener Home Renewables are not currently charging for a survey.  You may need to pay for an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) to be completed if you do not have one or it is out of date.  This normally costs around £60-£100.  We will help you arrange this with a local EPC inspector.
